It’s clear as soon as you see the exterior: there was no way to put any more SLK into this car. The SLK 55 AMG interprets the sporty look of the classic roadster more aggressively and uncompromisingly than ever. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with 265 kW (360 hp) makes for the highest class of driving enjoyment. The SLK 55 AMG is equipped as standard with the innovative AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC with steering-wheel gearshift for particularly rapid gearshifting. With it – and in combination with the AMG high-performance braking system and the AMG sports suspension – the SLK 55 AMG achieves maximum agility.
(SLK 55 AMG[1]: fuel consumption combined: 12.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 288 g/km)[2]
The bodystyling complements the performance. This includes an AMG front and rear apron, as well as side skirts in a titanium grey finish and high-sheen 18-inch multi-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, the AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes, plus an AMG rear spoiler.
Typical AMG design also awaits you in the interior – ranging from the sports seats in highest-quality nappa leather through the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles in silver-coloured aluminium to the AMG instrument cluster including RACETIMER.
AMG Performance Studio
For even more dynamic driving, there are exclusive optional extras available for the SLK 55 AMG from the AMG Performance Studio. For instance, here you can opt for multi-piece 18-inch twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, AMG performance suspension as well as AMG carbon trim elements, and the AMG performance steering wheel, with its flattened lower section and smaller rim diameter. For ultimate motoring enjoyment, the attractive AMG Performance Package is available; in addition to the options already mentioned, this package includes an AMG high-performance composite brake system.
Interior comfort
The interior of the SLK is the perfect place for enjoying yourself. Awaiting you here is a stylish symbiosis of out-and-out sportiness on the one hand and, on the other, a high degree of space and comfort. The result is a clear enhancement of motoring pleasure. The optional leather appointments allow you to give your SLK an even more exclusive look: you can choose from leather in black, alpaca grey, orient beige or the new colour shade, gull-wing red. And anyone looking for an even greater air of refinement can opt for the luxurious nappa leather appointments: here, the seats are upholstered in finest nappa leather in either black or natural beige, and even the centre armrest is trimmed in soft black nappa, complete with elegant topstitching. Whatever you decide on, exceptional build and material quality are guaranteed. The SLK is, after all, one thing above all others: a Mercedes.
Seat comfort
Driving a Roadster means being close to the road, but in the SLK you do not have to do without comfort. The sporty seat contours with magnesium frames provide optimal lateral support, even when taking bends at speed. Heated seats are also available on request. And there are practical clothes hooks behind the backrests.
Give the SLK an even more exclusive appearance with optional leather upholstery. Choose between black, alpaca grey and orient beige leather upholstery – or opt for the new colour shade of gull-wing red, which hearkens back to the interior of the legendary gull-wing SL. You’re in for pure luxury if you select the leather nappa upholstery as the seat surfaces are covered with the finest nappa leather in black or natural beige and the centre armrest is upholstered in black nappa leather with soft cushioning.
COMAND APS control and display system
The optionally available COMAND APS control and display system not only guides you to your destination, it entertains you as you go. The innovative multimedia system comprises a hard-disk navigation system with a high-resolution 6.5-inch colour display and 3-D map display, DVD player, MUSIC REGISTER with 4 GB storage space for compressed audio files and a memory slot for SD memory cards.
In addition, you can operate the Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system with Dolby® Digital 5.1/DTS and 500 watts of output, the DVD changer and the telephone – with the LINGUATRONIC also via voice control. A Bluetooth hands-free system also comes as standard. It is included in the standard equipment in conjunction with the Audio 20 CD and Audio 50 APS systems.
Multifunction steering
With the multifunction steering wheel in the new 3-spoke sports design, the driver can control the volume of the audio system and operate the telephone. Further controls on the multifunction steering wheel can be used to call up information in the instrument cluster or change other settings. And all the while both hands remain on the steering wheel and the driver can concentrate fully on the road. Perfect ergonomics are also part of the bargain: the new sports steering wheel feels comfortable in your hand and the new optional wood decor, in light burr walnut or black ash, creates a particularly refined atmosphere.
Active safety systems
Should you ever find yourself in a critical situation, the intelligent electronics in the SLK will be there to help. If the car is at risk of skidding, the Electronic Stability Program ESP® can brake one or more wheels in a targeted manner as required, helping the driver to stabilise the vehicle again. If necessary the engine power is also reduced as appropriate. The electronic Brake Assist system can recognise emergency braking by the speed with which you apply the brake and instantly builds up the maximum braking force.
The SLK is available as an option with bi-xenon headlamps equipped with headlamp cleaning system, dynamic headlamp range adjustment and cornering light function. The cornering light function integral to the fog lamps is also automatically activated on the appropriate side at a speed of up to 40 km/h when turning or when driving around narrow corners, providing better illumination of the road.
Passive safety systems
The SLK provides outstanding protection from the very start. The extremely rigid passenger cell and crumple zones already ensure a high level of occupant safety. The A-pillar and the rollover bars also give the Roadster great structural strength.
Depending on the accident type, airbags and belt systems are selectively activated in addition. The sensor system only activates the restraint systems that are actually needed.
Airbags
Depending on accident severity, the adaptive front airbags in the SLK can be activated in two stages (only the first stage is activated during a minor collision where the trigger threshold is exceeded). During lateral impacts which exceed a certain threshold, the head/thorax sidebags in the flanks of the seat backrests are deployed on the impact side.
Roll-over protection
Roll-over protection is a particularly important part of the SLK safety concept. Thanks to the extremely strong structure of the rollover bars, it provides protection even when driving with the roof open. The roll-over sensor recognises critical driving situations and activates both belt tensioners and the head/thorax sidebags, where appropriate, during certain types of roll-over.
